Richard Viguerie: Godfather of Conservatism

“If Rudy Giuliani — who is wrong on all of the social issues as well as the Second Amendment and is a blank slate on most other important issues such as judges, taxes and size of government — is the Republican presidential nominee, I would expect a mass exit of most conservatives from the Republican Party in 2008,” warns Richard A. Viguerie, a prominent conservative-movement fundraiser and author.

  1. The illogic and the injustice of the idea of abortion rights — I am supposed to deny my own and everyone else’s right not to have been aborted — would leave me no peace. Because of the abortion issue, I switched my allegiance from D to R about ten years ago, despite some strong countervailing pressures. I come from a family and I live in a neighborhood — the Upper West Side of Manhattan — where to affiliate with Republicans is considered practically inhuman, but the peace I have found from voting my conscience is precious and I won’t give it up.

If it happened that both major parties nominated for president candidates who opposed my right not to have been aborted, I would vote for the most reasonable third-party candidate who supported that right.

  2. I’d never vote for Rudy for president, and I’ve voted for Reagan (2x), Bush (2x), Dole, Bush (2x). As a conservative, I’ll abandon the party that abandons me.
